The Herkimer Diamond
Herkimer diamonds are not diamonds. They are doubly terminated quartz crystals, formed five hundred million years ago in dolostone deposits in Herkimer County, New York, and they arrive already faceted, already finished, shaped entirely by geology without human intervention.
That natural double termination, a point at each end, is rare in quartz and gives each crystal a clarity and geometry that lapidaries spend careers trying to replicate. They form in pockets within the rock, growing slowly in complete isolation, which may explain why they emerge so clean.
No two are identical. The inclusions, the veils, the phantoms trapped inside are a record of conditions that no longer exist.
The Pendant
This particular crystal measures 15mm, Presented on a 45cm Italian sterling silver chain, the length sits at the collarbone.
